STRUGGLE TO RAISE TWO CHILDREN SUFFERING RARE GENETIC DISORDER

25/11/2005

Nov 16 2005 - Northwich Chronicle
Anthony Harvison meets a Mid Cheshire couple Paul and Rachel Preston who are fighting for answers over a rare genetic condition.
LIFE is essentially about energy, without it we can't survive.
Think about what happens when there's a power cut, and then imagine the consequences when it's not the national grid, but the body's own supply that fails.
This is the case with the Preston family. Mum and dad Rachel and Paul Preston act as full-time carers to their children Kieran, seven, and Stacey, 11, who suffer from a rare genetic condition known as Mitochondrial Cytopathy.
Mitochondria are the 'powerhouses' of human cells, responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support growth.
